Understanding Natural Changes in Vulvar and Vaginal Health

Doctors emphasize that the vulva and vagina are two different parts of the body, and each can respond differently to hormones, aging, and overall health. Just as every face and body shape is unique, the appearance of the vulva naturally varies from person to person in size, shape, color, and symmetry. There is no single definition of what is “normal.”

As women age, especially during and after menopause, hormone levels—particularly estrogen—begin to decline. These hormonal shifts can affect the tissues of the vulva and vagina in several ways. Some women may notice increased dryness, thinner or more delicate skin, reduced elasticity, or changes in sensation and comfort. Others may experience discomfort during exercise, everyday activities, or intimacy.

 

For many, these changes are mild and manageable. For others, symptoms can become frustrating or interfere with quality of life. The important thing to remember is that these experiences are extremely common and are a natural part of the body’s changing biology—not something to feel ashamed of or embarrassed about.
