Wisconsin Woman Sentenced to 15 Years After Stepdaughter Found Severely Malnourished
A Wisconsin woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after authorities said her prolonged abuse and neglect left her 14-year-old stepdaughter weighing just 35 pounds, a condition prosecutors described as life-threatening.
According to court records, Melissa Goodman, 51, was convicted for her role in the abuse and neglect of the teenager, who suffered from severe malnutrition after years of mistreatment. Investigators said the child was isolated from family members and denied the care and support she desperately needed.
Survivor Speaks in Court
During the sentencing hearing, the now-teenage survivor delivered a powerful victim impact statement, describing the lasting emotional pain caused by the abuse.
“You really ruined my childhood, and it hurts that you did. You isolated me from my family, the only ones who actually cared. You had the choice to help when I needed it, but instead you joined in on the abuse and neglect. So I hope you have fun in jail because that’s where you need to be.”
Her statement underscored both the physical and emotional trauma she endured and the strength she has shown in speaking publicly about her experience.
Other Defendants Still Facing Charges
Authorities have also charged three other adults in connection with the case. Their cases remain pending, and they are expected to appear in court at a later date.
A Reminder About Child Abuse
Cases involving child abuse and severe neglect can leave lifelong physical and psychological effects on survivors. Child welfare experts stress the importance of reporting suspected abuse and ensuring that vulnerable children have access to safe adults, medical care, and support services.
The sentencing marks one chapter in a deeply troubling case, while the survivor continues her journey toward healing and recovery.
